Beware of scam phone calls
Have you received a suspicious call from someone claiming to be Toronto Hydro Billing and Collection Department?
To reduce any risk of fraudulent activity, we want our customers to know the facts and spread the word. Toronto Hydro never calls demanding payment with a pre-paid card and we never threaten to disconnect power immediately.
To avoid being fooled:
- Don’t make any type of payment – simply hang up
- Report suspicious calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501, quoting file number 844396
- Contact Toronto Hydro’s Customer Care at 416-542-8000
Some of our business and residential customers are receiving phone calls that seem to be from Toronto Hydro asking for immediate bill payment. The caller threatens to disconnect your power and asks for payment from a pre-paid card. They then ask you to buy a pre-paid card at a location such as a grocery or drug store, post office or gas station.This is a scam. Toronto Hydro never asks for this type of payment, and we never threaten to disconnect power immediately. Don’t provide any personal or account information, and do not make any type of payment. Simply hang up.
Report this call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 and quote file number 844396. And, please notify Customer Care at 416-542-8000, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If it’s an evening or weekend, call the next business day. |
